Double-sided adhesive tapes

A double-sided adhesive tape has a sticky surface on each of its sides. It allows for the assembly of two materials while generally remaining invisible after application. It is used for the fixation of components, mounting, industrial assembly, signage, leather goods, packaging, and many applications requiring a clean finish.

The choice mainly depends on the materials to be assembled, their roughness, the weight of the elements, and the desired duration of adhesion. It is also important to consider temperature, humidity, vibrations, exposure to UV or chemicals, as well as the thickness available between the two surfaces.

A thin double-sided adhesive tape is suitable for flat surfaces and assemblies requiring a low thickness. A foam tape is thicker and can compensate for certain irregularities, distribute stresses, and absorb vibrations. PE foams are often used for general mounting, while acrylic foams meet more demanding adhesion needs.

A transfer tape consists essentially of an adhesive mass deposited on a liner, without a permanent central backing. It allows for a very fine and flexible adhesion. A double-sided tape with a backing includes an intermediate material, such as polyester, non-woven, PVC, or foam, which provides additional thickness, stability, or resistance.

A permanent tape is designed to create a durable and difficult-to-remove bond. A repositionable adhesive allows for adjusting the position of the piece during installation before the adhesion fully develops. A removable double-sided tape is intended to be removed more easily when the assembly needs to remain temporary or detachable.

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease or residues. The tape should be applied without stretching, then pressed down evenly to achieve consistent contact. It is advisable to avoid touching the adhesive sides and to wait for the adhesion to build up before subjecting the assembly to significant stresses.

A test should be carried out on the materials actually used, under conditions representative of production. It allows for checking adhesion, mechanical strength, resistance to stresses and the quality of removal when necessary.
