A gummed tape moistening machine is a device designed to moisten, dispense, and cut a specified length of gummed kraft tape. Water activates the adhesive on the tape before it is applied to the cardboard. This equipment is primarily used at packaging, conditioning, and order preparation stations.

The operator installs the roll of gummed kraft tape in the machine and then selects the required length of tape. The dispenser feeds the tape, moistens its adhesive side, and cuts it before presenting it to the operator. The activated tape can then be applied directly to the cardboard to ensure its closure.

Standard adhesive tape has an adhesive that is directly activated by pressure. Gummed tape is coated with a dry adhesive that must be moistened before application. Once activated, this adhesive penetrates the fibres of the cardboard and creates a strong, clean seal that is difficult to remove without leaving a trace.

An automatic wetting machine allows for the quick preparation of strips of regular length without measuring or manually moistening them. It facilitates repetitive closures, limits material waste, and improves the organisation of the packaging station. It is particularly suited to logistical and industrial environments that regularly handle shipping cartons.

The choice mainly depends on the width of the strip, the diameter of the roll, the lengths to be dispensed, and the packaging speed. It is also important to consider the capacity of the water tank, the number of programmable settings, the triggering mode, and any additional options such as a pedal or a photoelectric cell.

Compatibility with a reinforced gummed strip depends on the machine's capabilities, the thickness of the substrate, and its cutting system. Some wetting machines can dispense standard and reinforced gummed kraft, while others are limited to certain materials. Therefore, it is necessary to check the characteristics of the strip and conduct a test if in doubt.

Maintenance mainly involves regularly cleaning the tank and the humidification system to avoid deposits. It is also important to check the passage surfaces, the drive rollers, and the condition of the cutting blades. Regular maintenance helps to maintain uniform moistening, a clean cut, and reliable operation of the machine.
