Masking & washi tape

A masking tape is designed to temporarily protect a surface during a painting, treatment, finishing, or transformation operation. It allows for precise delimitation of the areas to be worked on and limits splashes, smudges, or dirt. After the operation, the tape should be able to be removed cleanly without damaging the substrate.

Standard masking tape generally uses a crepe paper backing that offers good flexibility and versatile use. Washi tape is made from a finer and more regular rice paper. It allows for particularly sharp paint lines and is suitable for work requiring more precision.

The choice depends on the nature of the surface, the duration of application, the temperature, and the level of precision required. It is also important to consider the adhesive strength, the flexibility of the tape, and the removal conditions. A delicate surface, a high-temperature operation, or a fine finish requires specific masking tapes.

To achieve sharp lines and limit paint bleed, it is recommended to use washi tape or fine line tape. Their thin backing conforms well to the surface and allows for a regular delimitation. The tape should be applied with even pressure on the edges to avoid smudging.

A fragile, recently painted or sensitive surface requires a tape with moderate adhesion and clean removal. Some washi tapes are specifically designed for delicate finishes and sensitive surfaces. A prior test is recommended to ensure that the tape does not leave residue and does not damage the surface.

Industrial painting, baking, heat treatment, or bodywork operations may require a tape resistant to high temperatures. The backing and adhesive must maintain their hold throughout the exposure period. Therefore, it is necessary to check the maximum temperature, exposure time, and removal conditions specified for each tape.

The surface must be clean, dry, and free of dust or grease. The tape should be applied without excessive stretching and then pressed down evenly, especially on its edges. To achieve a clean removal, it is advisable to adhere to the recommended application time and to remove the tape gradually, at an appropriate angle.
