Acrylic foams

A double-sided acrylic foam tape is a thick, viscoelastic bonding solution with a sticky surface on both sides. It allows for the durable assembly of different materials while distributing stresses over the bonding area. It is particularly used for industrial mounting, signage, automotive, construction, and the assembly of technical parts.

An acrylic foam consists of a viscoelastic acrylic mass that directly contributes to adhesion and stress absorption. A PE foam uses a polyethylene backing coated with adhesive on both sides. Acrylic foam is generally preferred for durable and demanding assemblies, while PE foam meets many common mounting and fastening needs.

A thin double-sided tape is especially suitable for flat surfaces requiring little thickness. A thicker acrylic foam can compensate for slight irregularities, distribute stresses, and absorb some shocks and vibrations. It is therefore suitable for assemblies subjected to movements, expansions, or differences in level between surfaces.

The thickness should be chosen according to the flatness of the materials, the differences in level, and the stresses applied to the assembly. A thin foam is suitable for regular surfaces and discreet fittings. A greater thickness improves conformability and allows for more compensation of irregularities. However, foam that is too thick does not replace the proper preparation of surfaces.

A transparent foam is suitable for assemblies on glass, transparent plastics, or applications requiring a less visible fixing. A grey foam easily integrates into many industrial and metal fittings. A black foam may be preferred on dark parts or when the edge of the adhesive may remain visible. The choice mainly depends on the desired final appearance.

In certain applications, a high-performance acrylic foam can replace or complement mechanical fasteners such as screws, rivets, or drilling. It allows for the distribution of stresses over a larger surface and achieves a cleaner finish. However, feasibility depends on the weight of the parts, the bonded surface, the applied forces, and the conditions of use.

Depending on its formulation, acrylic foam can adhere to metals, glass, painted surfaces, certain plastics, and various technical materials. Compatibility depends on the roughness, cleanliness, and surface energy of the substrate. Difficult-to-bond plastics, powdery surfaces, or heavily structured surfaces may require special preparation or a particular solution.

Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, and residues. The tape should be applied without stretching, then pressed firmly and evenly over the entire bonding area. It is also important to respect the adhesion build-up time before subjecting the assembly to significant stresses.
