NATUCO chooses DERFI for eco-friendly, elegant, and secure packaging
The young Lyon-based start-up NATUCO has launched the marketing of the first designer indoor worm composter. With its product NEMA, the company offers an innovative solution allowing city dwellers to recycle their organic waste directly at home, simply, cleanly, and without odours.
In order to respect the ecological and high-end dimension of its product, NATUCO was looking for a packaging solution that was both durable, aesthetic, and reliable for sealing its boxes. The objective was clear: to offer a package consistent with the brand's values while ensuring a strong and professional closure.
To meet this need, NATUCO turned to one of DERFI's flagship products: the DERFI DNT-AT gummed tape moistener, combined with an eco-friendly gummed kraft tape.
Who is NATUCO?
NATUCO is an eco-company based in Lyon, founded by Felicia Gruner and Jérémy Villevieille. Much more than just a furniture brand, NATUCO has a strong ambition: to reconnect city dwellers with nature.
In this approach, the company designs furniture inspired by living things, aimed at integrating more nature into urban interiors. After several years of research and development, and thanks to the success of a crowdfunding campaign, NATUCO launched the marketing of NEMA, its indoor composter, in 2022.
This project is part of a global environmental approach, where every detail matters: the product, its use, its design, but also its packaging.
NEMA: an innovative indoor worm composter
NEMA is an indoor composter designed to allow everyone to recycle their organic waste at home, without constraints, nuisances, or odours. Its sleek design allows it to easily blend into an interior, like a decorative object or a plant furniture.
The principle is simple: the product resembles a flower pot placed on a worm composter. The organic waste deposited in the composter section is gradually broken down by the worms. This process both nourishes the plant and provides it with the necessary water, without additional watering.
With NEMA, NATUCO therefore offers a practical, aesthetic, and ecological solution, capable of transforming a responsible action into a simple and pleasant daily experience.
NATUCO's need: a stylish, ecological, and efficient packaging
A solution adapted to high production rates
The crowdfunding campaign launched by NATUCO in 2022 was met with great success, reaching 400% of its pre-order target. The project was also voted 'favourite by La Banque Postale', further enhancing its visibility.
In light of this enthusiasm, and with distribution also ensured by Nature & Découvertes, NATUCO needed to implement a packaging solution capable of keeping up with high production rates.

An ecological requirement consistent with the product
The ecological dimension is at the heart of NATUCO's identity. It was therefore essential that NEMA's packaging be in line with this approach.
Traditional plastic adhesives did not fully meet this requirement. NATUCO was looking for a more responsible solution, compatible with the paper and cardboard sector, and consistent with the brand's environmental values.
The kraft gummed tape thus represented a relevant alternative, as it is made of kraft paper and a water-activated plant-based adhesive.
A high-end finish for a design product
NEMA is a carefully crafted, innovative product with high added value. Its packaging had to reflect this quality from the moment the parcel was received.
Beyond technical performance, NATUCO was looking for a solution that offered:
- a clean and aesthetic closure
- a qualitative appearance
- consistency with the product's premium image
- a more refined customer experience upon receipt
- The gummed tape allows for cleaner, more natural, and more elegant packaging than some traditional plastic adhesives.
The solution provided by DERFI
The DGT-250D gummed tape moistener
To meet both ecological objectives and production imperatives, DERFI proposed that NATUCO equip itself with a DERFI DGT-250D gummed tape moistener.
As its name suggests, this electric moistener allows for the distribution of moistened paper strips, which seems to be the best compromise for an ecological and durable sealing of cartons. Compared to competing products, this moistener also has many advantages.

Thanks to the precise centimetre adjustment of the cutting length, the DGT-250D is capable of producing strips from 15cm to 210cm. The multiple programming options and numerous preset buttons allow for seamless cutting without worrying about lengths. This is particularly practical and efficient when the size of the boxes is standardised.
Usable in all circumstances
The DGT-250D is the only electronic humidifier on the market that adapts to the temperature of the work area thanks to its adjustable heating temperature. It thus offers the same performance in summer as in the middle of winter.

Gummed tape: an ecological solution
Gummed tape can be considered an ecological product. Why?
It is no secret that adhesive tapes made from plastic materials are increasingly being abandoned for sealing cardboard packaging. Indeed, fully recyclable, and even compostable, solutions are now being sought, and this trend is only set to increase.
Unlike adhesive solutions made from PP, PVC or composites, thegummed tape A0401is:
- Made from a plant-based, recyclable and biodegradable adhesive
- Made from Kraft paper, which is also recyclable and biodegradable
The gummed tape is fully compatible with the recycling processes of the paper and cardboard sector, making it a truly eco-friendly solution.
An tamper-proof solution to protect high value-added products.
Once soaked with water, the adhesive part of the gummed tape penetrates deeply into the cardboard. This has the advantage of making the parcel closure very strong, but also proves its tamper-proof nature. The use ofgummed tape reinforced with a fibreglass mesh A0401Ais also possible to further strengthen the closure. It is particularly used for heavy cartons.
