Packaging tapes

A packaging adhesive tape is designed to close, hold and secure boxes and parcels. Also called closure tape, packing tape or packaging scotch, it is used during packaging, storage, handling and shipping operations. Its performance depends notably on its backing, adhesive and the weight of the parcel.

The choice depends on the weight of the parcel, the quality of the box, storage conditions and the duration of transport. It is also necessary to take into account the application temperature, the closing speed and the method of manual or automated application. Heavy, recycled or heavily used boxes may require a reinforced tape or one that offers higher adhesion.

BOPP tape is made of a polypropylene film. It provides a consistent closure and is suitable for many common packaging operations. Kraft tape uses a paper backing, which blends more discreetly on brown boxes and facilitates their identification in recycling streams. The choice depends on the strength, presentation and environmental goals sought.

A kraft adhesive tape has a pressure-sensitive adhesive that can be applied with a standard dispenser. A gummed tape has a dry adhesive that must be moistened before application. Once activated, it penetrates the fibres of the cardboard and forms a seal that is difficult to remove without leaving a visible mark.

For heavy cardboard, it is preferable to choose a tape that offers mechanical strength and adhesion suitable for the stresses of transport. A reinforced kraft tape, a reinforced gummed tape, or a technical packaging adhesive may be necessary. The quality of the cardboard, its fill level, its weight, and the handling conditions must be taken into account.

A silent adhesive tape unwinds with a reduced noise level compared to a standard packaging tape. It improves user comfort in workshops, warehouses, and packing stations where many parcels are sealed daily. It remains important to check its adhesion, strength, and compatibility with the cardboard used.

The cardboard must be clean, dry, and free of dust before application. The tape should be applied evenly on the flaps, then pressed sufficiently to ensure good contact with the surface.
