Electric adhesive tapes

The category "Electric adhesive tapes" includes adhesives intended for insulation, protection, shielding, or holding applications in electrical, electronic, and electrotechnical environments. It covers various uses such as component insulation, circuit protection, electromagnetic shielding, or the holding of bundles and windings.

Designed to offer safety, precision, and reliability, these tapes feature technical properties adapted to the constraints of industry: dielectric strength, thermal resistance, chemical resistance, and compatibility with sensitive environments. They help protect installations, secure assemblies, and improve the performance of electrical systems.

Frequently asked questions about electrical adhesive tapes

An electrical adhesive tape is a technical tape designed to insulate, protect, secure or identify cables, wires, windings and electrical components. Depending on its composition, it can also withstand high temperatures, protect against abrasion or contribute to the electromagnetic shielding of equipment.

The choice depends on the level of insulation required, the operating temperature, the substrate to be protected, and mechanical or chemical constraints. It is also necessary to check the thickness of the tape, its dielectric strength, its break resistance, its adhesion, and any standards or certifications required by the application.

An insulating tape limits the flow of electric current and protects components or connections. A conductive tape, such as copper adhesive tape, is designed to ensure electrical continuity or contribute to shielding against electromagnetic interference. Therefore, these two types of tapes meet different needs.

Polyester is commonly used for insulation, marking, and holding components. Polyimide is more suitable for applications requiring high thermal resistance. Glass fabric offers good mechanical and thermal resistance, while PTFE is suitable for environments requiring low surface adhesion or good chemical resistance. Copper is used for electrical shielding.

High-temperature environments require tape specifically designed to maintain its adhesive, insulating, and mechanical properties. Polyimide, glass fabric, PTFE tapes, or certain silicone adhesives are generally suitable for these constraints. The maximum temperature and duration of exposure should always be checked on the technical data sheet.

Dielectric strength indicates the ability of an insulating material to withstand an electric voltage without breakdown. It is an important criterion for cable insulation, windings, transformers, or electronic components. The required value depends on the system voltage and the safety requirements of the installation.

The surface must be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or residues. The tape should be applied with consistent pressure to ensure uniform contact with the surface. Creases, bubbles, and excessive tension that could reduce the quality of the insulation or cause premature peeling should be avoided.

It is advisable to specify the type of component or wiring, the voltage, the temperature, the necessary dimensions, and the mechanical, chemical, or electromagnetic constraints. DERFI can study the application, propose tests, and guide the user towards a polyester, polyimide, glass fabric, PTFE, or copper tape that meets the project's requirements.
