Transfer tapes

A double-sided transfer adhesive tape mainly consists of an adhesive mass applied to a protective liner. After application and removal of the liner, only the layer of glue remains between the two materials. This structure allows for a very fine, discreet, and even adhesion, without a thick central support.

A standard double-sided adhesive tape has a permanent central support, for example, made of polyester, non-woven, or foam. A transfer tape generally does not have a central support, although some versions may incorporate a very fine backing. It therefore offers a reduced thickness and conforms more easily to the shape of the surface.

A standard transfer tape mainly deposits a thin layer of glue between the materials. A reinforced model incorporates a grid, fibres, or a polyester structure that improves its mechanical strength and stability. Reinforced transfer adhesive tapes are particularly suitable for porous, rough, or irregular surfaces and for applications requiring greater hold.

According to its formulation, a transfer adhesive tape can be used on paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, wood, coatings, varnished surfaces or certain porous substrates. Compatibility depends on the roughness, cleanliness and surface energy of the material. A test is still recommended for difficult-to-bond plastics and very irregular surfaces.

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease or residues. The tape is first applied to the first material with consistent pressure, then the liner is removed before contact with the second surface. Some formats can also be applied with a manual ATG-type applicator to achieve a quick and controlled application.

The choice depends on the materials to be assembled, their surface condition, the desired thickness and the level of adhesion required. It is also necessary to consider temperature, humidity, mechanical stresses and the potential need for reinforcement.
