Gummed tapes
The "Gummed Tapes" category includes activatable paper adhesives, primarily used for sealing boxes and packaging. Valued for their sealing power and tamper-evident nature, these solutions are particularly well-suited to logistics operations, packaging, and shipping.
Reliable, clean, and secure, gummed tapes reinforce packaging closures while improving their integrity. They also offer an attractive solution for companies seeking consumables compatible with recycling initiatives or efforts to reduce plastic in packaging.

Frequently asked questions about gummed tape
Gummed tape is a kraft paper adhesive tape whose dry glue must be activated with water. Once moistened, the glue penetrates the fibres of the cardboard and forms a strong seal. It is mainly used to close and secure packaging in logistics, packaging, industry, and online commerce.
The adhesive side of the tape is moistened before application. Water activates the glue, then the tape is applied to the flaps of the cardboard with consistent pressure. During drying, the glue adheres directly to the fibres of the cardboard. The tape must therefore be used with a suitable moistening system and applied immediately after activation.
Standard tape has an immediately pressure-activated adhesive and primarily adheres to the surface of the cardboard. Gummed tape must be moistened and creates a deeper bond with the fibres of the cardboard. This allows for a clean seal that is difficult to remove without visibly damaging the packaging.
Standard kraft gummed tape is generally suitable for light to medium-weight cartons. Reinforced gummed tape incorporates a backing, particularly made of fiberglass, which increases its mechanical strength. It is more suitable for heavy cartons, sensitive parcels, and packaging subjected to significant stress during handling or transport.
The water-activated adhesive penetrates the cardboard and creates a sealing effect. An attempt to remove it generally results in visible degradation of the tape or the surface of the cardboard. This feature facilitates the identification of an opening and helps to reinforce the integrity of parcels during storage, handling, and shipping.
Gummed tape should be applied with a moistener capable of activating its adhesive evenly. For occasional needs, manual equipment may be suitable. For repetitive operations, an automatic moistener allows for the distribution, moistening, and cutting of regular lengths, while improving the speed and quality of sealing.
The choice depends on the weight of the parcel, the quality of the cardboard, its dimensions, and the constraints related to storage or transport. A standard kraft tape may be suitable for common packaging, while a reinforced version will be preferable for heavy or heavily used cartons. DERFI can study the packaging, speed, and application method to propose the appropriate tape and moistener.
