A cold cutting machine uses a non-heated blade to cut the material. It is suitable for many films, sleeves, technical ribbons, and non-adhesive strips. A hot cutting machine uses a heated blade that cuts the material while sealing its edges. It is particularly suitable for textiles and synthetic materials that are prone to fraying.

Depending on the model, an industrial machine can cut straps, sleeves, textile strips, technical ribbons, plastic films, Velcro®, belts, or other non-adhesive materials. Compatibility depends on the width, thickness, rigidity, and the material's reaction to cutting. A test is recommended for technical or specific supports.

A photoelectric sensor allows for the detection of a marker, a space, or a variation in contrast on the material. It can particularly be used to cut labels or printed supports at a precise location. This function avoids working solely with a fixed length when the cutting position must follow a marking present on the roll.

The choice mainly depends on the type of material, its width, its thickness, the length of the pieces to be prepared, and the quantity to be produced. It is also necessary to determine whether a cold, hot, straight, angled, or rounded cut is required. The production speed, the expected precision, and the programming functions must also be taken into account.

The accessories allow for adapting the equipment to the organisation of the workstation. An articulated arm, for example, facilitates the positioning of an unwinder close to the operator. A liner collector allows for rewinding the protective backing of an adhesive tape. Other supports and equipment can improve stability, ergonomics, or the management of consumables.

It is recommended to use a safety cutter suitable for the material being cut and the operator's action. Depending on the model, the blade may be protected, retractable, or positioned to limit accidental contact. The choice should also take into account the thickness of the material, the frequency of use, and the safety requirements of the workstation.
