Surface protection adhesive tapes

A surface protection tape is designed to temporarily preserve a material against scratches, dirt, abrasion, and light impacts. It can take the form of a tape or an adhesive film applied during the manufacturing, handling, storage, transport, or installation of a product.

Depending on the product, a protective adhesive film can be applied to glass, plastic, metal, painted surfaces, profiles, or decorative elements. Compatibility depends on the material, its roughness, surface condition, and sensitivity. A preliminary test is recommended on fragile or recently painted substrates.

The choice mainly depends on the surface to be protected, the duration of application, and the constraints to which the product will be exposed. It is also important to consider the level of adhesion, abrasion resistance, temperature, storage conditions, and the desired removal quality.

The adhesion must be sufficient to keep the protection in place, without risking damage to the substrate during removal. Low adhesion is generally suitable for delicate or very smooth surfaces. Higher adhesion may be necessary for rough materials, prolonged transport, or more demanding handling conditions.

A clear film allows the surface to remain visible during its protection, which facilitates visual checks. A coloured film is more easily noticeable and allows for quick identification of protected areas. The colour can also help organise parts or prevent a protection from being forgotten before delivery or final assembly.

One must choose an adhesive tape designed for temporary protection and adhere to the recommended application duration, temperature, and usage conditions. The surface must be clean and dry before application. The film should then be removed gradually, without waiting for the adhesive to age or be exposed beyond its capabilities.

It is recommended to conduct a test on a representative surface, under actual manufacturing, storage, or transport conditions. This test allows for checking adhesion, hold, resistance to handling, and the quality of removal.
